The Meaning of Adinkra Symbols
Share
It's one of the questions we hear most often at FunkyNChunky: "What does this symbol mean?" And it's our favourite question to answer because Adinkra symbols aren't just decorative. They're a language. A philosophy. A way of carrying meaning close to your skin.
Each symbol tells a story rooted in Akan culture, originating with the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Traditionally stamped onto cloth using carved calabash stamps and natural dye, Adinkra symbols were worn at ceremonies, funerals, and celebrations a visual vocabulary for life's most important moments.
Today, they appear on jewellery, homewares, and fashion as a way of bringing that meaning into everyday life. At FunkyNChunky, every piece we make in Ghana carries this intention: that what you wear should mean something.
6 Adinkra Symbols and What They Mean
The Duafe represents femininity, beauty, and care — both for oneself and for others. It is a symbol of grace and the nurturing spirit. A beautiful choice for someone who leads with love.
Gye Nyame — Except for God
Perhaps the most widely recognised Adinkra symbol, Gye Nyame speaks to the supremacy of God and the resilience of faith. It is a reminder that some things are beyond our control and that there is peace in that.
Sankofa — Return and Fetch It
Depicted as a bird looking backwards, Sankofa teaches us to learn from the past in order to move forward. It is a symbol of wisdom, reflection, and the courage to reclaim what matters.
Dwennimmen — Ram's Horns
Strength and humility, held together. The ram fights fiercely but bows its head to drink. Dwennimmen reminds us that true power is never arrogant.
Nyame Dua — God's Tree
A symbol of God's presence and protection, Nyame Dua is often placed at the entrance of a home. Wearing it is a way of carrying that shelter with you wherever you go.
Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu — Siamese Crocodiles
Two crocodiles sharing one stomach, yet fighting over food. This symbol speaks to unity, shared destiny, and the folly of conflict within community. A powerful reminder that we are more connected than we sometimes remember.
How to Choose a Symbol That's Right for You
There's no wrong answer here. Some people choose a symbol that reflects who they already are a quiet affirmation of their values. Others choose one that represents who they're becoming, or a quality they want to cultivate.
You might also choose a symbol as a gift for a new mother (Duafe), a friend going through change (Sankofa), or someone who needs reminding of their own strength (Dwennimmen).
Take a moment. Read through the symbols again. Notice which one makes you pause.
That's usually the one.
